Good podcast! I’m glad that you are back.
I just wanted to comment on your “No One under 18” policy. I started playing when I was 16.5, which was a year ago. The game is hugely complex, and from an intellectual standpoint, I’d like to say that younger kids couldn’t handle it. I wouldn’t, however, sight the metagame aspect as the reason for keeping out young’ins. The game has a terribly designed UI that makes it inaccessible to both young players and stupid adults. With perseverance and some built-in intelligence, however, teenagers can get a hang of the game. Br1ck Squad, for instance, has a 14 year-old FC. Sure, he probably gets trolled a lot and made fun of, but he’s mastered that aspect of the game and has fun doing it.
tl;dr- An good attitude towards an Eve style of play is all that is required to play the game, and I think dedicated 13+ year olds can handle it.
I agree that some between 13 and 18 can handle it, critical thinking skills start developing at about age 12 and everyone matures at a different rate. 16 would probably work, but we chose to stick with the more conservative U.S. age of majority.
It’s arbitrary, but necessary given the links that get posted in TEST fleet chats. Maturity is not strictly a function of age, but I’m not all that eager to be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Ah, the infamous fleet porn. I did not think of that (as my fleet chats are usually pretty clean), but that is a good point.
